Beth Halterman, Masters Intern
“You don’t have to be positive all the time. It’s perfectly okay to feel sad, angry, annoyed, frustrated, scared and anxious. Having feelings doesn’t make you a negative person. It makes you human.” — Lori Deschene
This quote represents a lot of what I believe as a therapist. We are all complex beings filled with unique experiences, emotions, and our own ways of handling stressful and unpredictable situations. From time to time when we don’t fully understand how to handle events that are going on in our lives, we need someone to walk with us through those tough times. As a mental health counselor, I want to walk with you as you navigate through your journey and help you find your way to the answers you are looking for.
I am excited to begin my journey at Inner Courage Counseling as a Masters-level intern. I am currently working towards my Masters of Education in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from DePaul University in Chicago, Illinois. As I begin the final year of my Master’s program, I realize the incredible opportunity I have in front of me to work alongside other professionals who are equally as passionate about mental health and personal well-being as I am, and who will help me continue to grow as a therapist. I have extensive training in strengths-based therapy, which involves using personal strengths to overcome everyday stressors. I also worked on the Eating Disorder Unit at Linden Oaks Behavioral Health Services as a behavioral health associate where I worked both one-on-one and in groups, with people struggling with eating disorders and body image issues.
When it comes to therapy, I do not believe that there is one approach that is universally beneficial to everyone. Each client is different and has their own unique story that they wish to tell. Because of this, I like to tailor the therapeutic approaches that I work from to meet each client’s specific needs. I primarily see children and adolescents, but I also enjoy working with couples and groups as well. My areas of clinical interests include: anxiety, depression, eating disorders/body image issues, grief & loss, couples counseling, group counseling, and trauma. I enjoy practicing from a Cognitive-Behavioral (CBT) approach, but I also enjoy using Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Play Therapy, Mindfulness, and Strengths-Based Therapy.
In my spare time, I enjoy spending time with my dogs Penny and Bo, trying new restaurants, fishing, camping (really anything that involves being outside!), baking, reading, and relaxing on the couch.
