Chelsea Bogda, Therapist, Clinical Supervisor, Inner Courage Counseling
Are you feeling overwhelmed with work, or maybe your mind won’t shut off to enjoy a moment with your friends or family. Maybe your kiddos are acting out, and you don’t know how to help! In those moments, when we can’t seem to find our way, we might need someone to guide us in the right direction.
“We don’t have to do all of it alone. We were never meant to.” –
Brené Brown
While therapy can seem frightening or uncomfortable, sometimes we need someone to help navigate through life’s difficulties. When working with a therapist that aligns with our needs, it can often improve the therapeutic experience. As a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor, I have a passion for working with the child and adult populations. While my approach for working with both populations differs, the safe, nonjudgmental, and empathic environment, I strive to provide is the same.
Children
Children can often experience emotions in a big way and may not understand what they mean or what to do with them. I have experience working with children having a difficult time expressing and understanding emotions, experiencing anxiety, problems with ADHD, communication, or anger. When working with children, I value the involvement of the parent(s)/guardian(s). If children have multiple opportunities to practice skills learned in the therapeutic setting, they are more likely to see lasting changes. I utilize a combination of approaches and techniques such as:
Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
- Helping kiddos learn about and discuss thoughts, feelings, and behaviors.
- Teaching how to recognize and understand undesired/unhealthy thoughts and replacing them with healthy/desired thoughts.
- Helping change behaviors that lead to everyday challenges.
- CBT can often help improve self-image and develop skills to help regulate emotional responses, problem-solve, and self-control!
Mindfulness
- Mindfulness helps to practice being in the moment, controlling thoughts and attention.
- It can improve the ability to focus and regulate emotional responses.
Growth mindset
- Developing a growth mindset can help build resilience and a love of learning.
- Teaches kiddos with hard work and dedication; they have the power to succeed.
When pulling from a variety of approaches, I find it most important to incorporate the use of play and creative techniques (i.e., sand tray, games, arts, music, etc.). The overall goal is to help children learn about emotions, when and why they may arise, and how we can communicate and respond to them in a way that is healthy and suited to the environment. I work to meet children where they are developmentally and emotionally, providing an environment that is safe, fun, and educational!
Adults
Life can often throw too many obstacles on our path, making it difficult to reach all of our goals. I have experience working with adults facing life stressors/transitions, struggling with task and time management, experiencing overwhelming worry or sadness, symptoms of panic, and individuals who want to strengthen skills of communication. When working with adults, I utilize evidenced based approaches such as:
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
- Providing education about cognitive distortions.
- Helping clients to challenge and change undesired patterns of thinking and behavior.
Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT)
- Exploring and teaching interpersonal skills, mindfulness, distress tolerance, and emotion regulation.
I also incorporate interventions from positive psychology and creative approaches, implementing forms of music, writing, and art into the counseling environment. Overall, I value the importance of an individualized approach, adjusting the therapeutic experience to meet the needs and interests of the client. I am passionate about walking alongside my clients on their individualized journey towards self-discovery, growth, and peace.
