Katie Dwyer, Masters Intern, Inner Courage Counseling
I am very excited to be interning with Inner Courage Counseling for the clinical training sequence of my program. I currently attend Northwestern University, where I am pursuing a Master of Arts degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. I previously attended the University of Chicago, where I did research on depression in older adulthood. I primarily see adult clients and I have experience with younger adults, older adults, and adults in midlife. My clinical interests include depression, anxiety, trauma-related issues, emotion regulation, stress management, and adjustment issues related to change or life transitions. I also strive to be culturally competent in my practice and I welcome the diversity of all clients. I have experience with racially and ethnically diverse clients, as well as clients in the LGBTQ+ community.
As a counselor, I aim to create an open and empathic environment in which my clients feel comfortable exploring themselves and their challenges. I work collaboratively with each individual client to help formulate goals and make forward progress. Every step of the way, I consider each client’s unique needs and strengths. To support my clients in an individualized fashion, I believe in using an eclectic approach. I incorporate several orientations into my work with clients, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), person-centered therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and psychodynamic therapy. I also utilize Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT), and I have formal training in Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT).
I believe that every person is capable of positive change no matter what came before therapy. Most importantly, I want to help my clients become empowered so they feel confident in handling whatever comes after therapy. I am passionate about supporting my clients through their challenges and I am grateful that I can bring this passion to Inner Courage Counseling.
