Melanie Thomas, MA

Melanie Thomas mental health counseling intern

Melanie Thomas, Therapist, Inner Courage Counseling

Learning is a life-long process. I am committed to spending my whole life dedicated to learning more about humankind in order to create a better world for all of us. My journey of learning began in a small town in Minnesota, where I grew up. It then led me to earning my Bachelor of Arts in Psychology at the University of Minnesota in the Twin Cities. Now, it has led me to becoming a graduate student attending Lewis University in Romeoville, Illinois, pursuing a Master of Arts degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling.

I am honored to have been accepted by Inner Courage Counseling as an intern during the last phase of my graduate training program. My experience in the field of mental health, up until this point, has mostly consisted of working with children on the Autism Spectrum, and more recently, as a community mental health worker specializing with the homeless population. My areas of clinical interest include (but are not limited to): anxiety, depression, borderline personality disorder, eating disorders/body image issues, multicultural issues (including acculturation/assimilation), trauma, career issues, social skills training, parent skills training, couples therapy, family therapy, and coping skills.

I would describe my theoretical orientation as eclectic, with elements drawn from Reality Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Solution-Oriented Possibility Therapy, and Narrative Therapy. I think that every individual has their own interpretation of their reality, and this perception is what they base their thoughts, feelings, and actions off of. I think that people are generally good, with the potential to become their best selves if they are willing to embrace change in their life. I think that clear and congruent communication is key to developing and maintaining healthy relationships, which in turn help enrich a person’s life. I am a firm believer of having healthy coping skills, taking responsibility/ownership of one’s decisions/actions in life, setting SMART goals, and using creative techniques (writing, art, music) in the therapeutic process.

I also think that cultivating a sense of self-awareness through mindfulness practices can help someone find a sense of purpose to their life by getting a better understanding of what is important to them and what is not. I am here to provide a safe space that you feel comfortable to be vulnerable in. I am here to collaborate with you, guide you, motivate you, provide you with new perspectives/ideas, challenge you, and help you learn along your journey through therapy.

My hopes are that you positively benefit from our interaction with one another, that you are able to learn how to better interact with others in your life, that your quality of life increases, and that you are able to accomplish the goals that are important to you. I am here to listen to you and endeavor to understand you and your unique worldview. I look forward to meeting you and getting to know you and help you along your therapeutic journey to find solutions to your problems and find the meaning in your life.

"When getting in touch with someone to find a therapist I was emailed by Stacy Ramirez, she was very kind and helpful which was appreciated because I have never seen a therapist so I was unsure of the process. I had my first session with Beth Halterman, she made sure to introduce herself before the first session which i thought was very sweet because I was a bit nervous about seeking a therapist to begin with and seeing someone face to face for the first time without having ever spoken before would have made me a bit more nervous."

"Inner Courage Counseling has a lovely building that's warm and clean. My counselor was so good that when she started at Inner Courage I moved practices so I could stay with her. I would absolutely recommended them to anyone seeking counseling."

"I have always been hesitant about counseling especially when it involves my daughter. But I have to say Brittany Roback is absolutely amazing. My daughter has been seeing Brittany for about 6 months now and I have seen great improvements. Just after the first session I saw my daughter using skills Brittany had shown her. Brittany has always made sure to make my daughter and myself feel comfortable. My daughter sees it as a safe place when she sees Brittany."

"Inner Courage Counseling has really been there for me from the moment I first called and they continue to be. I have always struggled to find a counselor that I mesh well with and one that creates an environment that I feel encouraged to dedicate time for myself. I’ve learned things about myself that I never knew before and I’m excited because I know I will continue to. I truly feel like I am growing in a positive way after each session. That’s both exciting and encouraging for me."
