Sammie Kapsis, MA, Inner Courage Counseling

Δίγλωσση θεραπεύτρια- Coming from a traditional culture that perceived family as the only place to discuss personal problems, and did not trust anyone outside the family as a resource for support, it’s easy to relate to the uncertainty you may have in reaching out for help. Brene Brown, a researcher on empathy, courage, vulnerability, and shame shares that “Owning our story and loving ourselves through that process is the bravest thing that we will ever do.” You deserve to be heard by the unbiased ears of a professional who’s purpose is to honor your story, and all involved in it. To help you identify your inner strength, core beliefs and abilities to reduce unhelpful thoughts while discovering opportunities that create a happier, healthier and fulfilling life.

Sammie’s life experiences have inspired a dedication of over 20 years of working in the education field with those ages 6 months to 18 years, along with their families, care givers, teachers and community. She also has experience as a translator offering added support to those who English is not their first language. Her formal education consists of a BA in Psychology with an added focus on Multicultural communication, from George Mason University, 1998. A MEd in Counseling and Development, from the same university awarded in 2007 and a license as a Professional School Counselor.

Sammie Kapsis is a Clinical Therapist at Inner Courage Counseling, who is passionate about supporting children through young adults. Sammie believes that no matter how young, a child’s future perception of self will be impacted by their experiences from a young age. For that purpose she has focused most of her life work on empowering young minds. Using a person-centered approach that highlights their strengths while empowering them to advocate for their needs, she helps increase their confidence and self-esteem, in a caring, safe and supportive environment of unconditional positive regard. Raised in a traditional Greek Family environment locally and abroad, she values cultural influences in daily life, as well as individual differences and personal values. She’s been married for over 22 years, has 2 daughters in college, 2 dogs and a parrot at home and enjoys music, good food, outdoor activities and lifting weights.

In every session, there is intentionality in creating a safe, compassionate, caring atmosphere where you are fully aware that your counselor is genuinely present, actively listening and walking alongside your life story as you embrace the challenges together, and create goals that open the possibility of hope at the close of each session.

The primary counseling therapies she uses are cognitive behavioral, multicultural, person-centered, play, brief-solution-focused, and strength-based. Being aware that every client brings in a unique set of skills and experiences and can benefit more from other theoretical counseling approaches, she is open to an even broader base of counseling techniques.

The counseling environment may also adjust to meet each client’s needs, such as changing the office to a playroom-like atmosphere when working with a young child. One may require an adventure that physically moves them across the given space, to accomplish tasks, practice new skills and overcome challenges. Another may involve an art space where individuals of varying ages are free to explore their inner feelings, or create coping skills that can be worn as an armor when facing a challenging individual or unhelpful thought. With teens, there is freedom for self-expression without judgement. At all ages, role play and imagery could be used to practice effective communication skills for sharing of needs, challenging unhelpful behaviors and rehearsing strategies without exchange of guilt or shame.

"When getting in touch with someone to find a therapist I was emailed by Stacy Ramirez, she was very kind and helpful which was appreciated because I have never seen a therapist so I was unsure of the process. I had my first session with Beth Halterman, she made sure to introduce herself before the first session which i thought was very sweet because I was a bit nervous about seeking a therapist to begin with and seeing someone face to face for the first time without having ever spoken before would have made me a bit more nervous."

"Inner Courage Counseling has a lovely building that's warm and clean. My counselor was so good that when she started at Inner Courage I moved practices so I could stay with her. I would absolutely recommended them to anyone seeking counseling."

"I have always been hesitant about counseling especially when it involves my daughter. But I have to say Brittany Roback is absolutely amazing. My daughter has been seeing Brittany for about 6 months now and I have seen great improvements. Just after the first session I saw my daughter using skills Brittany had shown her. Brittany has always made sure to make my daughter and myself feel comfortable. My daughter sees it as a safe place when she sees Brittany."

"Inner Courage Counseling has really been there for me from the moment I first called and they continue to be. I have always struggled to find a counselor that I mesh well with and one that creates an environment that I feel encouraged to dedicate time for myself. I’ve learned things about myself that I never knew before and I’m excited because I know I will continue to. I truly feel like I am growing in a positive way after each session. That’s both exciting and encouraging for me."
