Sammie Kapsis, MA
Sammie Kapsis, Therapist, Inner Courage Counseling
Coming from a traditional culture that perceived family as the only place to discuss personal problems, and did not trust anyone outside the family as a resource for support, it’s easy to relate to the uncertainty you may have in reaching out for help. Brene Brown, a researcher on empathy, courage, vulnerability, and shame shares that “Owning our story and loving ourselves through that process is the bravest thing that we will ever do.” You deserve to be heard by the unbiased ears of a professional who’s purpose is to honor your story, and all involved in it. To help you identify your inner strength, core beliefs and abilities to reduce unhelpful thoughts while discovering opportunities that create a happier, healthier and fulfilling life.
Sammie’s life experiences have inspired a dedication of over 20 years of working in the education field with those ages 6 months to 18 years, along with their families, care givers, teachers and community. She also has experience as a translator offering added support to those who English is not their first language. Her formal education consists of a BA in Psychology with an added focus on Multicultural communication, from George Mason University, 1998. A MEd in Counseling and Development, from the same university awarded in 2007 and a license as a Professional School Counselor. She is excited to intern with the caring and talented therapists at Inner Courage Counseling, as she applies for her LPC.
Sammie works with all ages, especially children, adolescents, and teens. Issues she focuses on include but are not limited to anxiety, coping skills, depression, self-esteem and parenting. In every session, there is intentionality in creating a safe, compassionate, caring atmosphere where you are fully aware that your counselor is genuinely present, actively listening and walking alongside your life story as you embrace the challenges together, and create goals that open the possibility of hope at the close of each session. The primary counseling therapies she uses are cognitive behavioral, multicultural, person-centered, play, brief-solution-focused, and strength-based. Being aware that every client brings in a unique set of skills and experiences and can benefit more from other theoretical counseling approaches, she is open to an even broader base of counseling techniques.
The counseling environment may also adjust to meet each client’s needs, such as changing the office to a playroom-like atmosphere when working with a young child. One may require an adventure that physically moves them across the given space, to accomplish tasks, practice new skills and overcome challenges. Another may involve an art space where individuals of varying ages are free to explore their inner feelings, or create coping skills that can be worn as an armor when facing a challenging individual or unhelpful thought. With teens, there is freedom for self-expression without judgement. At all ages, role play and imagery could be used to practice effective communication skills for sharing of needs, challenging unhelpful behaviors and rehearsing strategies without exchange of guilt or shame.
