Skylar Nagy, LCPC, Clinical Supervisor
Skylar Nagy, Therapist, Inner Courage Counseling
Skylar is a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC) who engages in collaborative treatment with teens, families, and adults of all ages. Skylar uses empathy and authenticity to build a trusting relationship with clients to then serve as a guide to help clients learn to trust and develop compassion for themselves. She works with a wide variety of client challenges, but her specialties include: anxiety, mood disorders, ADHD, relationship issues, and life transitions.
Prior to joining the ICC team, Skylar worked in a behavioral hospital, working with both inpatient and partial hospitalization populations to help adult and adolescent patients with acute mental health challenges. She then worked in a community mental health center where she worked with a wide range of clients individually in an outpatient setting. While working in these settings, Skylar became familiar with a broad range and acuity of mental health challenges and began to recognize the significant role of interpersonal relationships in both the origin and healing of unwanted symptoms. Skylar also recognized the inherent trauma inflicted on those of racial, ethnic, identity, and gender minorities and the culmination of these traumas in combination with the worldwide pandemic that have resulted in higher rates of depression, anxiety, isolation, and self-harm.
Through her work with a varying clinical population, Skylar developed a deeper appreciation of the importance and value of learning and understanding each client’s own unique individuality and identity to foster the healing process. Therapy cannot be effective if it does not account for a person’s own individual strengths and characteristics. Utilizing an eclectic approach to counseling, Skylar helps her clients grow and heal with the therapeutic techniques that they find most helpful. Additionally, she firmly believes that therapy is only beneficial when clients feel truly heard, understood, and safe with their therapist and will always work to build this trust or assist a client to find a more appropriate fit, if needed.
Skylar has observed the importance of recognizing and addressing unhealthy relationships and emphasizes building self-confidence and interpersonal effectiveness skills to build more meaningful social support. One of her primary goals is to help clients build the distress tolerance and emotional awareness to more successfully navigate the challenges in their lives, utilizing Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and Internal Family Systems (IFS) techniques . Overall, Skylar believes that developing a deeper understanding of and compassion for oneself is the key to unlocking better coping with stressors, more satisfying relationships, and a more fulfilling life.
